Pac-12 Rowers Excel at Pan Ams
Ciudad Guzman, Mexico - Former California rower Megan Smith and Washington graduates Ty Otto and Blaise Didier claimed medals for the United States at the 2011 Pan American Games, held on Lake Zapotlan in Ciudad Guzman, Mexico.
Smith, a 2007 Cal graduate, claimed a silver medal in the women's pair with Meg George on Monday. The pair held second place the entire length of the course before making a big push to the finish line. They finished in 7:29.05, ahead of Argentina.
Otto won gold in the men's pair with Michael Gennaro on Tuesday, finishing in 6:47:07. Brazil and Canada rounded out the top three. Otto, who graduated from Washington in 2011, and Gennaro were in the men's eight that captured gold at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships earlier this year.
Didier, who completed his Husky career in 2010, and Otto were in the men's eight that took the gold on Wednesday. The Americans finished in 5:39.32. Canada and Argentina placed second and third, respectively.
