Bank Of The West Weekly Volleyball Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — After pulling off two road upsets, UCLA's Rachael Kidder and Lainey Gera were voted Bank of the West Pac-12 Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. OREGON STATE's Arica Nassar was also selected the Pac-12 Volleyball Freshman of the Week. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Oct. 24-30.
Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.
Junior Rachael Kidder (Moorpark, Calif.) recorded 22 kills at then-No. 2 ranked California on Friday and 16 at then-No. 5-ranked Stanford on Saturday, as the now top-ranked Bruins completed a regular-season sweep of the Bay Area teams for the first time since 2000. Kidder, who averaged 5.43 kills per set over the weekend, also had 1.57 digs per set with seven against Cal and four versus the Cardinal. She added a pair of block solos and an ace on the weekend. Kidder leads the Bruins in kills (4.54) and points (5.09) per set.
Senior Lainey Gera (San Jose, Calif.) posted 15 digs and two aces versus the Golden Bears, and 18 digs and two aces against the Cardinals in UCLA's first regular-season sweep of the Bay Area teams in 11 years. Gera averaged 4.71 digs per set on the weekend. Gera never had fewer than five digs in any of the sets against Stanford. She leads the Bruins this year with 4.86 dps and has 1,750 for her career.
Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) was instrumental in leading the Beavers to a five-set win over Colorado. She had 14 kills while hitting .524 with four blocks and scoring 16.5 points. Nassar hit well over the team average in both matches, hitting .457 on the weekend with 20 kills (2.50 kps), while scoring over 3.00 points (3.06) per set. The wins mark the fifth and sixth conference wins, the most for Oregon State since 2005.
Kidder earns offensive player of the week honors for the second time this season, also garnering weekly honors for the second time in her career. Gera was selected the Conference's defensive player of the week for the second time in three weeks. It is the third time in her career she has received a weekly citation. With the two selections, UCLA has had 60 all-time weekly honorees. Nassar is the freshman of the week for the second time this season, earning the honor on Sept. 12.
Ranked No. 1 in this week's AVCA Coaches poll, the Bruins remain at home this weekend to host Washington and Washington State on Friday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 6. The Beavers are on the road for the FSN Pac-12 Volleyball Match of the Week on Friday, Nov. 4 at Arizona. Check local listings for the tape-delayed broadcast. OSU then takes on Arizona State on Saturday, Nov. 5.
