USC's Jones Named Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.— USC guard Maurice Jones has been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 21-27, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
The sophomore helped lead the Trojans to a 2-1 record last week with a home win versus Morgan State on Tuesday, a loss on Friday to UNLV—who upset then-No. 1 North Carolina the next day—and a close win over South Carolina on Saturday.
Jones set a USC record for three-pointers made in a game without a miss when he went 7-for-7 versus South Carolina on the final day of the Las Vegas Invitational. He contributed 28 points, all of which were crucial in USC's 63-60 victory. Jones went on a 14-point run with three minutes left to turn a four-point deficit into a five-point lead, and made two free throws at 19.8 seconds to solidify the win. The Saginaw, Mich., native's clutch performance landed him a spot on the Las Vegas Invitational All-Tournament team.
Over the last three games, Jones averaged 19.0 ppg on 20-of-35 (.571) shooting from the field, drained 10-of-16 (.625) three-pointers, averaged 3.0 apg and tallied four steals.
This is Jones' first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 34th all-time selection for USC.
USC takes a quick trip to UC Riverside on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. PT match-up, and then faces Minnesota on the road on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. CT.
Also Nominated: Justin Cobbs, CAL; Nate Tomlinson, COLO; Garrett Sim, ORE; Devon Collier, OSU; Aaron Bright, STAN.
