Andrews, Juricova Named Players of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA seniors Nick Andrews and Jana Juricova have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for January 9-15, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Andrews was a key contributor against 23rd-ranked Tulsa as Cal opened up the dual season with a 4-3 road victory on Friday. In doubles competition, Andrews and partner Christoffer Konigsfeldt defeated Tulsa's third-ranked team of Clifford Marsland and Ashley Watling 8-5 to clinch the doubles point for the Golden Bears. Then, with Cal up 3-2 in the dual, the Folsom, Calif., native defeated No. 83rd-ranked Watling in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3. 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Juricova opened up her spring season with victories in three singles and three doubles matches at the 2012 Cal Winter Invitational this past weekend. She took the singles title as she defeated Cal Poly's Alexa Lee, 6-3, 6-4, No. 49-ranked Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 82-ranked Catherine Isip of Saint Mary's College, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles, Juricova partnered with freshman Zsofi Susanyi twice to knock off Fresno State's Agrawal and Jodoin, 8-2; and to take out Saint Mary's Frampton and Jullien, 8-3. On the final day of the tournament, she paired with freshman Cecilia Estlander to stake an 8-4 win over Cal Poly's Davis and Lee.
