Stanford's Ogwumike Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — For the third-consecutive week, STANFORD's Chiney Ogwumike was named Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 23-29, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. She led the Cardinal to an overtime win over Bay Area-rival California to give Stanford sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 and remain undefeated in Conference play.
A sophomore forward, Chiney Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas) had one of the best outings of her career in the 74-71 over-time win over Cal on Saturday, setting new career highs for points (27) and rebounds (18). Her performance helped the Cardinal preserve the team's 74-game home winning streak and a 66-game winning streak in Pac-12 games (including postseason). A John R. Wooden award midseason candidate, Ogwumike was 9-for-16 (.563) from the field and 9-for-12 (.750) from the free throw line, also posting her ninth double-double of the season.
Ogwumike is the first player to be selected Pac-12 Player of the Week for three-straight weeks since former UCLA standout Natalie Williams was picked for three-consecutive weeks during the 1993-94 campaign (Jan. 31 - co-player of the week, Feb. 7 and Feb. 14). It is also Ogwumike's third-career weekly honor and Stanford's 84th all-time.
Ranked fourth in the nation in the Associated Press poll for the eighth-straight week, the Cardinal travels to Arizona State on Feb. 2 for a Thursday night nationally televised contest on Fox Sports Net (check local listings). It then heads to Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 4 to wrap up the weekend.
Also Nominated: Kimberly Brandon, ASU; Brittany Boyd, CAL; Chucky Jeffery, COLO; Ali Gibson, OSU; Markel Walker, UCLA; Michelle Plouffe, UTAH; Regina Rogers, WASH; Jazmine Perkins, WSU.
