Meister, Christian Named Players of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — UCLA redshirt senior Nick Meister and USC sophomore Kaitlyn Christian have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for January 30-Feb. 5, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Meister won a pair of singles matches over the weekend, helping ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team to wins over two top-15 teams. With Friday's dual match against No. 13 California tied at 3-3, Meister downed Nick Andrews, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 at court No. 1, propelling the Bruins to a 4-3 win. The following day at No. 6 Stanford, Meister upset 37th-ranked Ryan Thacher, 7-6(6), 1-6, 7-5 at the No. 1 position, helping UCLA to a 6-1 victory. With the two wins, Meister improved his record to 5-0 on the season.
Christian helped anchor the Trojans to their best start since 2007 with two more shutout wins this week, matching the 2007 opening of four 7-0 victories and one 6-1 finish through the first five matches of the year. Christian didn't lose a single set in singles, and also won out in doubles as USC topped No. 34 Saint Mary's and No. 27 Pepperdine with shutouts. Her singles wins from her No. 4 position were both dominating. No. 99 Christian beat Anna Chkhikvishili 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday, then blasted Arianna Colffer 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday. Teamed up in doubles with Sabrina Santamaria at the No. 1 position, the No. 3 pair served up 8-4 wins in both matches. Christian is a perfect 5-0 in dual-match singles now with a 13-4 overall record. In doubles with Santamaria, she holds an 18-3 overall record with a 3-0 dual-match record.
