ASU's Bach, Cal's Arioto Get Weekly Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA redshirt senior pitcher/utility Valerie Arioto was named Pac-12 Softball Player of the Week and ARIZONA STATE senior pitcher Hillary Bach was named Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for February 13-19, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Arioto earns Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after powering the Golden Bears to four wins at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Classic. Arioto hit .857 with a 2.714 slugging percentage and .929 on-base percentage. She finished the tournament with six hits, nine RBI and four home runs. Arioto's two home runs led Cal past DePaul, 2-0, in the opening game of the weekend. She leads the Pac-12 in slugging (2.000) and home runs (7).
With two wins in the Littlewood Classic last week, Bach brought her winning streak to 5-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 32.1 innings pitched and 28 strikeouts. In the 7-0 win over Central Michigan on Friday, Bach went the distance, striking out nine. She pitched six innings in the 12-0 win over Minnesota, allowing only three hits. All five of her wins have come as shutouts, keeping batters to a .157 batting average.
This is the second Player of the Week honor for Arioto and the 72nd weekly honor for Cal all-time. This is Bach's first career Pitcher of the Week honor and Arizona State's 63rd award.
Cal travels to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Cathedral City Classic beginning Friday, Feb. 24. Arizona State hosts Central Connecticut for four games starting on Friday.
