Cal Wins Two Relays For Early Lead
Federal Way, Wash. - Defending national champion CALIFORNIA swept the Wednesday relay events to take the early lead at the 2012 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Men's and Women's Diving Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
The Golden Bears captured the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.77 to repeat as champions of the event. The winning relay team was made up of sophomore Cindy Tran, sophomore Melissa Bates, senior Colleen Fotsch and senior Liv Jensen. STANFORD finished second in 1:36.90 and ARIZONA rounded out the top three with a time of 1:37.33.
Cal continued its dominance in the 800-yard freestyle relay, winning its eighth Conference title in the last nine years, finishing in 6:57.86. Senior Sara Isakovic, freshman Catherine Breed, freshman Caroline Piehl and senior Liv Jensen picked up the second win for the Bears. Stanford was second in 6:58.82 and USC swam 7:01.76 to claim third place. All three teams swam automatic NCAA qualifying times.
The Bears have the early lead with 128 points followed by Stanford in second with 112. Arizona, ARIZONA STATE and USC are tied for third with 104 points each.
The 2012 Pac-12 Championships continue Thursday, Feb. 23 with preliminaries at 11 a.m. PT and finals at 6 p.m. PT. Tomorrow's swimming events will be the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay. Diving begins with the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter.
