Ogwumikes on Naismith Trophy Midseason List
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike and sophomore forward Chiney Ogwumike were named to the midseason list of 32 players for the 2012 Naismith Women's College Player of the Year award presented by AT&T, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday.
It is the third national player of the year midseason list to which the sisters have been named this season. The two are also on the John R. Wooden Award and USBWA Player of the Year midseason lists.
Nnemkadi and Chiney are the top two scorers and rebounders for the No. 2-ranked Cardinal, who has a 26-1 overall record and won its 12th straight Conference title this year. Together, they account for 37.7 points and 20.6 rebounds per game while shooting a combined 56.2 percent from the field for Stanford.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike, one of the leading national player of the year candidates, leads the Pac-12 with 21.7 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She has a team-leading 14 double-doubles and has scored in double figures in 25 of her 26 games. Ogwumike poured in a career-high 42 points against then-No. 6 Tennessee on Dec. 20. She was a top pick to both the Associated Press and ESPN.com Preseason All-America Teams this season and is a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Chiney Ogwumike has posted 13 double-doubles this year, scoring in double figures 24 times. She averages 16.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while ranking second in the Pac-12 with her 59.9 field goal percentage. Nationally, she is fourth in field-goal percentage and 20th in rebounding. She has also been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Team and is on the ballot for the Academic All-America Team.
The Naismith Trophy will be awarded on April 1 at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Denver.
