Sarmiento, Susanyi Named Players of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — USC sophomore Ray Sarmiento and CALIFORNIA freshman Zsofi Susanyi have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for March 26-April 1, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Sarmiento helped the Trojans haul in head coach Peter Smith's 200th career win at USC with a winning road trip to open up Pac-12 play. Sarmiento was dominant at the No. 2 singles position and with teammate Daniel Nguyen in doubles in a pair of shutouts over hosts No. 22 Washington and No. 59 Oregon. Sarmiento paired with Nguyen for an 8-2 win in doubles at Washington before pinning up a 6-4, 6-3 win in singles over Husky Emmett Egger. At Oregon the following day, he opened with an 8-3 win in doubles before hustling to the first singles win of the day on a crushing 6-0, 6-1 win over Robin Cambier in what would become Smith's 200th win with the Trojans. The Pac-12 road sweep gave USC a 2-0 mark in conference action and improved USC to 21-0 in 2012 for an overall win streak of 41 in a row. Sarmiento improved to 29-8 in singles with a 14-3 dual-match mark, and is 20-4 in doubles with Nguyen to go with their 15-2 mark in dual matches.
No. 14 Susanyi went undefeated in matches against Arizona and Arizona State over the weekend. First, the freshman took out No. 66 Lacey Smyth of Arizona, 6-3, 7-5, to clinch Cal's 5-2 win over the Wildcats. She then upended ninth-ranked Jacqueline Cako of ASU, 6-2, 6-1, in a match that took just 68 minutes, to help the Golden Bears to a 7-0 win against the Sun Devils. It was Susanyi's ninth-straight singles win and her team-high 30th overall. She improved to 14-2 in duals with a perfect 7-0 mark in conference dual matches. Her two wins over Smyth and Cako put her at 17 wins against ranked opponents this season. In doubles, Susanyi had two different partners as she earned another pair of wins to move to 23-6 in doubles matches with a 14-1 mark in duals. Susanyi teamed with junior Tayler Davis to claim an 8-6 win over Arizona's tandem of Hailey Johnson and Sarah Landsman. She then paired with senior Jana Juricova for an 8-5 victory against ASU's Cako and Leighann Sahagun. Her win with Juricova was their 10th-straight together, and pushed their record to 13-1 with an 8-0 mark in duals. Susanyi's effort helped the Bears earn their ninth consecutive dual victory; their longest streak since an 11-match streak in 2009 took the team to the NCAA title match. Cal's 7-0 start in Pac-12 play is also the best start for the program since the Bears went 10-0 in 1985 to win the NorPac title.
