Hanfmann, Goransson Awarded Weekly Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — USC freshman Yannick Hanfmann and CALIFORNIA junior Annie Goransson have been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for April 9-15, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

Hanfmann swept singles and doubles competition to help USC to two big conference wins and extend the Trojans' win streak to 45 straight games while pushing USC to 25-0 overall and 6-0 in Pac-12 play. The freshman shined brightest in his singles win over Cal's Christoffer Konigsfeldt on Sunday, when he pulled out a 7-5 win in his first set and rolled to a 7-5, 6-2 win that put USC up 3-0 in that match. The previous day, he and doubles teammate Emilio Gomez clinched the doubles point, and then Hanfmann cruised to the first singles win of the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Robert Stinemann to help record USC's second shutout of the Cardinal this season. Hanfmann is now 32-7 overall in singles and 19-3 in dual-match play. He and Gomez are 17-1 in doubles overall and 10-1 in dual matches.
No. 99 Goransson went undefeated in all four of her matches last weekend to reach several milestones as the Golden Bears upended top-ranked and undefeated UCLA on Friday, and then fell by a 4-3 margin to No. 4 USC on Saturday. Goransson's two singles victories brought her to the 30-win plateau and made her just the second Bear to reach that mark this season. First, she defeated 98th-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA by overcoming a 6-4 loss in the first set to win, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. She then defeated USC's Gabriella DeSimone, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. It was her 11th-straight singles win dating back to March 2. In doubles matches, Goransson helped the Bears secure the doubles point for the 18th time this year as she and partner Anett Schutting won their ninth and 10th consecutive matches. The 17th-ranked Cal tandem took out UCLA's ninth-ranked team of Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez, 8-3, and then upended USC's 51st-ranked duo of Valeria Pulido and Zoe Scandalis, 8-5. Goransson's tough play helped keep Cal in striking distance for its first-ever Pac-12 conference title.
