Four From Pac-12 On NCBWA Watch List
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Four Pac-12 relief pitchers have been named to the 45-person midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, an honor given to the top reliever in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the NCBWA on Thursday.
The four student-athletes representing the Conference are Oregon State junior Tony Bryant, Arizona State junior Jake Barrett, UCLA junior Scott Griggs and Oregon sophomore Jimmie Sherfy.
Bryant is listed as one of six "notable nominees." He was a preseason All-America first-team selection for the NCBWA and CollegeBaseballInsider.com, and was on the 2011 Stopper of the Year midseason watch list. Barrett was a Baseball America preseason second-team selection, while Sherfy leads the nation in strikeouts per nine innings at 12.97 (50 strikeouts over 34.7 innings pitched).
Sherfy leads the Pac-12 in saves with nine, while Griggs and Bryant follow with eight apiece. Barrett has registered six saves this season.
Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relation contacts and more than 90 nominations were received. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 6, prior to the start of NCAA Super Regional tournament competition.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced during the 2012 College World Series.
