Ten Women's Golf Teams Make Regional Field
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Ten Pac-12 schools are among the 72 teams named to the field for the 2012 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals, the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee announced Monday. Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 10-12 to determine the championships field.
Eight teams and two individuals from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, set for May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
Five Pac-12 teams, including host and No. 4 seed COLORADO, will participate in the West Regional at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. Defending NCAA champion UCLA earned the No. 1 seed while newly crowned Pac-12 champion CALIFORNIA received the fifth seed. The Golden Bears earned the Conference's automatic qualifier with their one-stroke victory at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships. STANFORD (No. 14) and OREGON STATE (No. 18) will also play in Erie.
Pac-12 runner-up USC, led by individual conference medalist Doris Chen, was named the top seed at the Central Regional, to be held at the Ohio State Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. OREGON (No. 7) will also play in the regional.
ARIZONA STATE earned the No. 2 seed in the East Regional at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa. ARIZONA (No. 6) and WASHINGTON (No. 10) will join the Sun Devils in making the cross-country trek.
The Pac-12 has captured 14 NCAA team titles in women's golf, led by Arizona State's seven wins. A total of 12 individual champions have come out of the Conference, including former Arizona great Annika Sorenstam, who captured the crown in 1991.
