Track & Field Athletes Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 23-30, 2012:

Men's Track Athlete of the Week: CHRIS DERRICK, STANFORD (Sr., Naperville, Ill.). Derrick ran 27:31.38 to set the American Collegiate Record in the 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational. The mark broke the mark that former Oregon Duck Galen Rupp set five years ago. Derrick also earned the Olympic 'A' standard and broke the Stanford school record by 28 seconds. He is currently No. 2 on this season's NCAA performance list.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week: DEBORAH MAIER, CALIFORNIA (RS-Jr., Cameron Park, Calif.). Maier broke a 27-year-old California school record in the 10,000 meter with a time of 32:12.47 at the Payton Jordan Invitational. In the process, she became the third-fastest collegian of all-time at the distance. She placed 12th in the 10K race, but was the top-collegiate runner in a field full of national and international veterans. Maier's time was well ahead of the previous Golden Bear mark of 32:40.76 posted by Kristen O'Hara in 1985. Maier's mark is the fifth-best ever collegiately and only two runners in NCAA history have ever run faster than her.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week: JAKE BAERTLEIN, WASHINGTON STATE (Sr., Portland, Ore.). Team captain of the Cougars squad, Baertlein won the pole vault at the Washington State-Washington Dual Meet with a personal-best height of 5.21m/17-1, surpassing his previous best by nearly one foot (4.93m/16-2). The pole vault win provided five crucial points to the Cougars in their 87-76 win over UW. Baertlein's mark is tied for eighth-best in WSU all-time pole vault records, tied for 43rd nationally and is fifth-best this season in the Pac-12.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week: MARISSA MINDERLER, USC (RS-Sr., Santa Clara, Calif.). Minderler won the shot put and javelin competitions, and placed fourth in the hammer and fifth in the discus throw at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet. She won the javelin with a throw of 46.35m/152-1, edging All-American javelin thrower and teammate Kristine Busa. Minderler also won the shot put with a mark of 14.92m/48-11.50, had a best throw of 58.63m/192-4 in the hammer and 41.57m/136-5 in the discus. She outscored the Bruins' women's throwers 10-7 in four events, helping the Trojans defeat the Bruins, 89-74.
