Olympic first, world record, three medals on Friday

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - As the Olympics wind down to its final days, Pac-12 athletes continue to collect medals. On Friday, not only did the Conference add a pair of golds and a silver, but athletes with Pac-12 ties contributed to a world record and recorded an Olympic first.

Allyson Felix (USC) and the USA women's relay team broke a 27-year-old world record in the 4x100 meter relay race to claim a gold medal, posting a time of 40.82 seconds. The medal is the second gold for Felix at the London Olympics after winning the 200-meter race.

Tunisia's Ous Mellouli (USC) took gold in the 10k (6.2 miles) open water marathon at Hyde Park, completing the course in 1 hour, 49 minutes and 55.1 seconds. He becomes the first-ever Olympian to win a medal in the pool and in the open water, despite having to fight off the flu the last couple of days. Mellouli was the bronze-medalist in the 1,500-meter freestyle.?

Bryshon Nellum and Josh Mance led the U.S. men's 4x400-meter relay team to a silver medal, posting a season-best time of 2:57.05. Nellum, who ran the first leg of the race, handed the baton off to fellow Trojan Josh Mance as the two earned their first-career Olympic medals.

After 14 days of Olympic competition, the Pac-12's medal count stands at 40 - 17 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze. If the Conference were a nation, it would rank sixth behind Germany (42) in total medals. The U.S. leads all nations in the medal count with 94, followed by China with 81. The Conference's 17 gold medals would rank fourth among all nations.
