Birnbaum and Wiet named College Soccer News preseason all-americans

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA senior defender Steve Birnbaum and UCLA senior defender Matt Wiet have been named College Soccer News Preseason All-Americans, the publication announced Monday. Birnbaum was a second-team selection, and Wiet was named to the third team.

Birnbaum, a first team All-Pac-12 honoree last season, has started in 36 games over the past two seasons. He has totaled two goals and five assists in his career from the backfield. Birnbaum has twice been named to the Academic All-Pac-12 honorable mention list. As a sophomore. Birnbaum was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention and earned a player of the week honor. Birnbaum was co-captain of the 2011 Golden Bears team.

Wiet has led the UCLA defense for two years in row and has been voted UCLA's Defensive Most Valuable Player for both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He was a second team All-Pac-12 honoree and and honorable mention Academic All-Pac-12. Wiet has been named to the third team NSCAA All-Far West for two consecutive years and has started every game the past two seasons.

The 2012 Pac-12 men's soccer season opens August 24-26. California travels to Santa Clara on August 24 at 7 p.m. UCLA hosts New Mexico live on the Pac-12 Networks on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m. Pac-12 men's soccer teams will be featured in 28 live contests shown on the Networks.
