TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona celebrated this summer with the selection of junior Brett Thompson and graduating senior Peter Tiberio to USA Rugby's 7s All-America Team. The two led Arizona into the championship match at June's Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s in Philadelphia.
It was the first such honor for Thompson, a former linebacker and special teams football player at Arizona who switched to rugby during his freshman season.
Tiberio's recognition capped an incredible career with the Wildcats that included five All-America selections, three times for 15s and twice for 7s.
Tiberio spent much of this fifth-year senior season playing for the United States National 7s Team in tournaments around the world. Now back at full strength, Tiberio saw his collegiate career ended when he was forced to leave the field with an injury against Dartmouth in the 2012 CRC 7s final. He has contributed this fall to the qualification of the U.S. for the 2013 Rugby 7s World Cup.
After USA gold medals in rugby at the 1920 and '24 Olympic Games, rugby returns as a medial sport at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
