OSU's Saxton and Defoe, and Stanford's Bugg named Pac-12 players of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Sept. 3-Sept. 9. Oregon State's Camille Saxton and Becky Defoe were voted Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, and Stanford's Madi Bugg was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
Oregon State senior Camille Saxton (Alberta, Canada) led OSU to claim the Chicago Classic title with wins over then-No. 2 Penn State, UIC and DePaul. Saxton was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting 4.46 kills per set, 4.88 points per set, 1.62 digs per set and 0.54 blocks per set. She had double-digit kills in each of the three matches, including a career high of 23 kills over the Nittany Lions. She also tallied her second double-double of the season against UIC with 15 kills and 10 digs. Saxton has led the Beavers in kills in eight of the team's nine matches this year.
Oregon State junior Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) helped the Beavers go 3-0 at the Chicago Classic, tallying 69 digs over three matches and was named to the Chicago Classic all-tournament team. Defoe had a career-best 31 digs in the five-set win over DePaul, marking the most digs in a single match by a Pac-12 player this season. She averaged 5.31 digs per set and 1.08 assists per set on the weekend. Defoe has 202 digs this season averaging 5.46 per set. Defoe also had one ace on the weekend and 14 assists with five apiece against UIC and then-No. 2 Penn State.
Stanford's freshman Madi Bugg (Apex, N.C.) helped direct the Cardinal offense over the weekend to earn a spot on the all-tournament team at the Stanford Invitational. Bugg averaged 11.40 assists and 2.0 points per set, while posting a .429 hitting percentage in wins over Santa Clara, Loyola and Pacific. On the defensive side of the ball, she tallied 3.20 digs and 1.20 blocks per set. Bugg had no less than 28 assists in all three matches, recording a weekend-high 48 assists in the win over Loyola, also adding 14 digs and four blocks. Bugg recorded two double-doubles on the weekend against both Loyola and in the championship match against Pacific.
Saxton and Defoe earn their first-career player of the week honors and are Oregon State's 15th weekly selection all-time. It is the first freshman of the week nod for Bugg and the Cardinal all-time..
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the second year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree.
The Beavers and Cardinal return to action this weekend. Oregon State travels to the Cal State Fullerton Tournament over the weekend to face Santa Clara, San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton. Stanford plays host to San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 14 then travels to Saint Mary's on Saturday, Sept. 15 for the Pac-12/WCC Challenge.
