UCLA's Bywaters and Stanford's Gleason named Pac-12 players of the week
By the Pac-12 Conference
UCLA forward Zakiya Bywaters and Stanford goalkeeper Aly Gleason were named Pac-12 women's soccer players of the week for the week of September 10-16.
Bywaters, a senior from Las Vegas, scored four goals on seven shots and added an assist in wins over Princeton and No. 18 Pepperdine to earn offensive Player of the Week honors. She notched a pair of goals an and assist less than five minutes apart in the first half of Friday's 7-0 win over Princeton. On Sunday, she scored a goal in each half, netting the game-winner at 10:44 and adding an insurance goal at 52:34. Bywaters has logged career-highs in points (14) and goals (6) this season, and she leads Bruins in both categories.
Gleason, a redshirt junior from Atwater, Calif., posted two clean-sheets and five saves against No. 15 San Diego State and UNC Greensboro at the Santa Clara Classic to garner Defensive Player of the Week accolades. She collected five saves on nine total shots against San Diego State on Friday, including a spectacular save of a hard shot from the penalty area in the second half that preserved a 1-0 victory for the Cardinal. Gleason was perfect in Sunday's 4-0 win over UNC Greensboro, though, for the first time in program history, Stanford did not allow a shot. The Cardinal has shut out four consecutive opponents, and Gleason owns a goals-against average of 0.59.
This is the first weekly honor for Bywaters, who is UCLA's second Player of the Week recipient of the season (31st all-time). For Gleason, this also marks her first Pac-12 Player of the Week award. Including Gleason, Stanford lays claim to a league-best 32 Player of the Week honorees.
UCLA kicks off its conference slate at Washington on Thursday, while Stanford opens league play on Sunday with a home match against Arizona State.
