Wopat, Wade and Bricio named Pac-12 volleyball players of the week
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 15-22. STANFORD's Carly Wopat was named the Offensive Player of the Week. WASHINGTON's Melanie Wade was voted the Defensive Player of the Week. USC's Samantha Bricio was selected the Freshman of the Week.
Junior middle blocker Carly Wopat (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the Cardinal in wins at No. 5 Washington and Washington State last week. Wopat led the team in kills in both matches, recording 15 kills on 34 attempts against the Huskies. Stanford, which has won 16 matches in a row handed the fifth-ranked Huskies their first home loss on the season. Again against WSU Wopat led the team in kills with 16 and had a .467 hitting percentage, while only recording two errors. Wopat also tallied seven blocks, six digs and an ace against the Cougars.
Freshman middle blocker Melanie Wade (Palo Alto, Calif.) helped UW hold Stanford for just .110 on offense. The Huskies out-hit the Cardinal and scored 19 more total points than Stanford, but suffered a loss in five sets. Wade had six blocks and four digs on the match. Against the Bears, Wade led all Huskies with a career-best 12.5 points as she set career-highs in nearly all categories. She had six kills on 11 attempts for a .545 attack percentage. She served up her first three aces of her career and added a match- and career-high seven blocks in the 3-0 win over California.
Freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio (Guadalajara, Mexico) was unstoppable as she served up 11 aces over six sets on the weekend. In the 3-0 win over Utah she was just one ace shy of tying the three- set USC record with an amazing seven service aces. In addition Bricio had six kills and one dig on the match. In the three-set sweep over Colorado she averaged six points per set as she logged four aces to go with 12 kills.
It is Wopat's third career weekly honor, with the selection Stanford now has 81 weekly honors all-time. It is Wade's first-career weekly honor nod and the Huskies' 35th weekly honor all-time. Bricio's freshman of the week selection is the fourth for USC.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the second year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree.
USC and Washington face off this weekend as the Huskies travel to USC on Friday. USC then has a quick turnaround hosting WASHINGTON STATE on Saturday. UW will travel to UCLA on Sunday. Both of UW's games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Meanwhile, Stanford will host ASU on Friday.
