Stanford's Quon and Oliver named Pac-12 players of the week
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - A pair of Stanford footballers, forward Rachel Quon and goalkeeper Emily Oliver, were named Pac-12 Women's Soccer Players of the Week for the week of October 22-28.
Quon, a senior from Lake Forest, Ill., had a hand in a pair of deciding goals against USC and No. 2 UCLA over the weekend that clinched a fourth straight Pac-12 title for the Cardinal to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. On Friday, she assisted on teammate Alina Garciamendez's game-winning goal in double overtime with a well-placed set piece to lift the Stanford to a 1-0 win over USC. On Sunday, she netted the game-winning goal against UCLA in the 79th minute to complete a second-half comeback that extended Stanford's Pac-12 winning streak to 41 games. A team captain and four-year starter, Quon has tallied 29 career points (5 goals, 19 assists) in 91 games at Stanford. In 2012, she ranks second among Cardinal defenders with 11 points (2 goals, 7 assists).
Oliver, a sophomore from Flossmoor, Ill., collected 13 saves on 23 total shots and allowed just one goal against two of the Conference's top shooting teams in USC and UCLA to garner Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Against the Trojans, she notched six saves on 12 total shots and posted her 25th career clean sheet to help the Cardinal to its 13th in a run of 14 consecutive victories. On Sunday, in a showdown between the nation's top-ranked teams, Oliver made a series of spectacular saves, including a diving two-handed save on a deflection late in the game, to help the Cardinal to a 2-1 victory over UCLA.
This is the first weekly honor for both players, who are Stanford's 34th and 35th all-time Player of the Week recipients. Quon and Oliver are the first Cardinal duo to earn the award in the same week, as this is the first year that offensive and defensive honors have been given separately.
Stanford wraps up its regular season slate on Sunday in a rivalry matchup with No. 23 California. The game, which will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks, kicks off at 11 a.m. PT.
