Tuesday Tape Room: Keith Price lets the game come to him, looks ‘surgical’
Tuesday Tape Room is Pac-12 Networks football analyst (and former USC assistant coach) Yogi Roth’s chance to break down tape in search of details worth focusing on — similar to what’s happening in team meetings throughout the conference today.
“Your preparation will set you free.”
That is a quote that Steve Sarkisian reminds his quarterbacks all season as they garner praise and blame. It serves as a simple reminder that if you prepare, you earn the right to cut it loose come game day, or as the UW staff likes to say, #ripit.
For two-thirds of the season, @pac12 fans have wondered what has gone wrong with Keith Price. But after breaking down each of the Husky games this season and talking to both Sarkisian and Price, it is clear that there is nothing wrong with Price. Rather, he has done what all QBs do—prepare and expect perfection.
The challenge for all signal callers is that perfection is impossible. And when you do not achieve perfection, you often try harder.
After meeting with Sarkisian and watching game film, Price recognized that he didn’t need to work harder, but trust himself and his eyes more. By doing that, Price has allowed the game to dictate what decisions to make with the football. This past weekend against Utah, he trusted his eyes and looked ‘surgical.’
While driving in Utah territory in the third quarter, Price gives a great example of not trying too hard and allowing the game to come to him.
As he drops back in the pocket on a deep play-action pass, Price trusts his feel for the pass protection and climbs the pocket, keeping his feet tied to his eyes, which allows him to throw the ball on-rhythm and deal a strike to his favorite target, Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
Price is flourishing for the now bowl-eligible Huskies at the right time, trusting that his preparation has set him free and reminding the nation that he can still #ripit.
