By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) announced its region award winners on Wednesday. ARIZONA's Lawi Lalang and OREGON's Jordan Hasay were tabbed West Region Athlete of the Year, while UO's Robert Johnson was named the West Region Women's Coach of the Year.
A sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, Lalang took the West title for the second-straight year with a 29:01 clocking this year, 36 seconds ahead of the field. He won the Pac-12 title for the second-consecutive year, as well, edging out his teammate Stephen Sambu. Lalang has taken top honors at the Greater Louisville Classic and Wisconsin adidas Invitational this season. Heading into the NCAA Championships as the individual defending champion, he is undefeated through two seasons and 10 collegiate cross country races.
Hasay, a senior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., claimed the West title for the third-straight year. In this year's regional race, she took the tape in 19:15, six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Individually, she placed second at the Pac-12 Championships in leading the Ducks their league title since 1995.
In his first year as head coach of the Ducks, Johnson has Oregon entering their sixth-consecutive NCAA meet. Ending the regular season ranked second in the nation, Oregon earned victories this fall at both the Pac-12 and West regional meets.
In addition to the honors announced above, the USTFCCCA recently released its all-region teams. The Pac-12 had 22 male runners make the all-region squad, while 23 women from league teams also earned spots on the team. The Conference led the nation with the most women's selections and tied for the second-most men's honorees.
Several Pac-12 teams and individuals will be competing at the NCAA Championships this Saturday, Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. The women's race will begin at noon ET, followed by the men's race at 1:15 p.m. ET. A live streaming of the event will be available on the NCAA's website at ncaa.com.
