Stanford Advances to Soccer Quarterfinals
STANFORD, Calif. - The match was all it was expected: Tough and physical against a rival in the NCAA tournament, with some rain adding to the grittiness of it all. No. 1 Stanford's 2-1 victory over No. 17 Santa Clara on Friday was all those things. But the lasting memory after the bruises healed were Courtney Verloo's two second-half goals that allowed the Cardinal to swoop into the Sweet 16.
UCLA Downs San Diego State 3-0 to Advance to NCAA Elite Eight
Third-seeded UCLA shut out second-seeded San Diego State, 3-0, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament in San Diego on Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Zakiya Bywaters, the Pac-12 Player of the Year, scored two early goals to give UCLA a 2-0 advantage, and Chelsea Braun added another goal as the Bruins recorded their third-straight shutout in the postseason.
Verloo Leads Stanford Into Sweet 16
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford advanced to the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive season and, in doing so, is one victory away from completing an undefeated home career for its seniors. The class of 2013 is 51-0-1 at Cagan Stadium and 93-3-4 overall.
Cal Falls to SDSU in NCAA Second Round, 2-1
SAN DIEGO - California took an early lead on Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick's 12th minute goal but couldn't hold onto it, as second-seeded San Diego State scored two second-half goals - including the gamewinner in the 83rd minute - to end the Golden Bears' season, 2-1, in the NCAA Tournament's second round.
UCLA Defeats Kentucky 5-0 in NCAA 2nd Round
San Diego, Calif. - Third-seeded UCLA exploded for four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over Kentucky in a NCAA second round game at San Diego State on Friday evening. Senior midfielder Chelsea Cline came off the bench to score two of the Bruins' four second-half goals. The Bruins advance to the third round to face the winner of the San Diego State-California evening match.
