Cal's new football coach brings element of surprise on all four downs
Sonny Dykes' Louisiana Tech Bulldogs went 9-3 this season and led the country with an average of 51.5 points and 577.92 yards per game. That’s something for Cal fans to get excited about, especially if you’re into scoring points.
You'd be wise to pay attention when Cal's special teams take the field too - specifically the punt team, lest you get faked out along with the opposition. Dykes' penchant for points includes fake punts, which he perfected (out of necessity) as a late-‘90s assistant under Hal Mumme at Kentucky.
Dykes shared that story at his introductory press conference Thursday in Berkeley. Somewhere, Steve Spurrier is throwing his visor at his computer.
