UCLA's Zamarripa and Courtney and OSU's Gaspar earn weekly honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 women's gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Jan. 7-13. UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa was named the Gymnast of the Week, teammate Olivia Courtney was voted Specialist of the Week, and OREGON STATE's Hailey Gaspar was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the week.
Zamarripa won the all-around and three events to lead then-No. 2 UCLA to a victory over then-No. 5 UTAH, 197.425-195.300. This was her second all-around victory, and she has totaled seven individual victories in just two meets this season. Against Utah, Zamarripa totaled a 39.675, the highest all-around total in the nation so far this season. On bars, she tallied a 9.975, tying her career high. Her 9.925 on beam set a new season high, while the 9.97 she earned on bars tied her career high. The O'Fallon, Ill., native, scored a 9.825 on vault, which was good enough for sixth place and tied her season-best. The Bruins achieved national-best scores in the team total (197.425) and floor (49.55).
Bruin junior, Olivia Courtney, tied for first place in two events over the weekend. She tallied a 9.90 on vault and a 9.95 on floor. Both scores set new season-highs, while her floor score tied her career-high. Courtney has now achieved two victories on vault this season. This is her first floor victory of the season, she placed second on floor in UCLA's first meet of the season. She is averaging a team-high 9.888 on vault and ranks second on floor with a 9.938 average.
Gaspar, a Los Alamitos, Calif., native, tallied the best score of her Oregon State career so far to help the Beavers to a 195.375-195.000 win over then-No. 14 Ohio State. Gaspar tallied a 9.875 on vault to tie for first on the event. Gaspar is a senior transfer from Boise State.
This is Zamarripa's seventh Gymnast of the Week honor and UCLA's 43rd all-time. Zamarripa is the first gymnast to earn seven Gymnast of the Week honor's in their career. She earned one in 2009, three in 2010, one in 2012 and has won both honors so far this season.
This is Courtney's first Specialist of the Week honor and UCLA's 21st all-time. It is Gaspar's first newcomer of the week honor.
Gymnast of the Week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008. It is the first year for Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.
The Bruins have the week off before traveling to ARIZONA STATE on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. MT. The Beavers hit the road traveling to Utah on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. MT. Oregon State and Utah will also face West Virginia and Southern Utah in the meet.
