This week in Pac-12 women's basketball
By the Pac-12 Conference
With four Pac-12 teams continuing to be ranked, another top-25 showdown is slated for this week. No. 18/19 UCLA hosts No. 22/23 COLORADO this week on Friday night on the Pac-12 Networks. Three of the top six teams in the standings face off this week. With the race for the regular-season crown and seedings for the Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament on the line and the first half of Conference play winding down, games this week could have significant impact later this season.
The Pac-12 has four teams ranked in the top-25 again this week with Stanford pacing the league, earning top-five rankings in both polls, coming in at No. 4 in the Associated Press poll and No. 5 in ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls. California is ranked No. 6/6, followed by UCLA at No. 18/19 and Colorado at No. 22/23.
Stanford junior Chiney Ogwumike was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after averaging 21.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 61.5 percent from the field. She was also selected the USBWA National Player of the Week. Washington's Talia Walton was selected the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after the leading the Huskies to a pair of victories with back-to-back victories.
STANFORD head coach and Hall of Famer Tara VanDerveer is just one win shy of No. 400 league victories. In her 27th season at the Cardinal helm, she is the only coach in Conference history to have won at least victories.
OREGON's Jillian Alleyene and CALIFORNIA's Gennifer Brandon account for the two highest single-game rebounding games in NCAA Division I this season. Alleyene grabbed 27 in a non-conference tilt in November to set the overall league mark and the most by a player in the country this season. Brandon's 26 last week are the second-most.
Alleyne and Ogwumike are two of several player from the Pac-12 who figure prominently in the NCAA stats. The league boasts four of the top 15 rebounders in the country, including Alleyne, who ranks third (12.9), Ogwumike ranks seventh (12.0), Brandon ranks 13th (11.4) and WASHINGTON's Aminah Williams ranks 15th (11.2.).
