Ogwumike, Galdeira earn weekly honors again
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3. STANFORD's Chiney Ogwumike was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second-straight week and fifth time this season, while WASHINGTON STATE's Lia Galdeira was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the third time this year. The five weekly selections in a season ties a Pac-12 record.
Junior forward Chiney Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas) capped off No. 4/5 Stanford's sweep of the Oregon schools Sunday with a career high of 32 points on 12-of-24 shooting along with grabbing 18 rebounds, just one shy of her career best. A national player of the year candidate, Ogwumike averaged 27.0 points and 15.5 rebounds while shooting 56.8 percent from the field, posting a double-double in both games. She scored 22 points with 13 rebounds in Friday's 86-62 win at Oregon then followed with her career-best 32 points two days later in the Cardinal's 65-45 win at Oregon State, earning Stanford its 20th win of the year and keeping the Cardinal tied atop the Pac-12 table at 9-1. Owgumike ranks fifth in the nation in scoring (22.4 ppg), seventh in rebounding (12.3 rpg) and seventh in field goal percentage (58.4). Her 17 double-doubles are the second-most in the country.
Freshman guard Lia Galdeira (Kamuela, Hawai'i) averaged 20.5 ppg, 6.5 rebounds and 7.0 spg in a pair of road victories last week, WSU's first road sweep of the Arizona schools since 1994-95. She posted back-to-back 20-point games, while shooting 47.4 percent from the floor. She opened the week with a 20-point, eight-rebound effort in the 54-43 win over Arizona State. She tallied 21 points with seven steals in the win at Arizona, scoring 12 points in the second half that sparked a deciding 19-4 run that gave WSU its first win in Tucson since 2009. Galdeira has scored at least 20 points in three-consecutive games.
It is Ogwumike's eighth-career player of the week honor and Stanford's 89th all-time. Her five selections tied the record set by USC's Cherie Nelson during the 1987-88 campaign.
The Cardinal is ranked fourth in the country in the AP poll again this week and will host Arizona on Friday, Feb. 8, followed by a Pac-12 Networks contest vs. Arizona State on Sunday, Feb. 10. The Cougars are also at home this week, welcoming USC on Friday and No. 17 UCLA on Sunday.
