USC's Morozov, Arizona's Brandon named Pac-12 swimmers of the month
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC junior Vladimir Morozov and Arizona freshman Bonnie Brandon have been named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Month for January, the Conference office announced Wednesday.
Morozov, a native of Redondo Beach, Calif., enjoyed a record-setting month as he helped the third-ranked Trojans to a trio of team victories in January. He opened the month by winning the 50 free (19.67) and leading USC's 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to wins against Hawaii. Against Wisconsin, he turned in a time of 19.57 to win the 50 free and led the Trojans to a win in the 200 free relay. He closed out the month in spectacular fashion at the Swim Classic at SMU, where on the first day, he tied the school record in the 100 breast (52.73) and won the 50 free with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 19.28. He also swam the first leg (backstroke) of the 400 medley relay, an event in which USC finished second by 0.05. His split (46.69) made him the second-fastest Trojan ever in the race. On the second night, Morozov broke his own school record in the 100 free (41.70) and helped USC come from behind to beat Michigan in the 200 free relay. He turned in an NCAA-best time of 19.21 on the opening leg of the relay. His time of 41.70 in the 100 free also stands as the fastest time in the country this season.
Brandon earned nine first-place finishes and helped the Wildcats to a pair of team victories, including an upset of No. 3 California, in January. The Centennial, Colo. native won four events in a quad meet against Oregon State, New Mexico State and Northern Arizona to kick off the month. She posted winning times in the 100 back (55.70), 200 back (2:01.30) and 500 free (4:58.28) and was a member of the winning 400 free relay team (3:18:33). She followed it up with solid outing against Cal, winning the 1000 free (9:55.51) and the 500 free (4:50.57). In her final meet of the month, Brandon won both the 500 free (4:49.87) and 1000 free (9:53.53) against Stanford. She was one of just two Arizona swimmers to win multiple events on the day.
This is Morozov's first career Swimmer of the Month award and USC's fourth all-time. On the women's side, this is Tosky's first career monthly award and the 5th for the Wildcats.
