Arizona State sweeps first Pac-12 softball weekly awards

By the Pac-12 Conference

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE swept the opening week of the Pac-12 softball Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards. Junior shortstop Cheyenne Coyle was named the Pac-12 Softball Player of the Week, while junior pitcher Dallas Escobedo was named Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 3-10, the Conference announced today.

Coyle, a transfer from Florida, started her career off as a Sun Devil on fire. The junior hit home runs in four of the seven games on the weekend including two in the 8-0 win vs. Indiana. Against Indiana, she went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. The Sun Devils went 7-0 at the Kajikawa Classic, beating New Mexico, Cal State Northridge, Indiana, Kentucky, Western Michigan, Bradley and Boise State. Coyle leads the team with five homers, 10 RBI and a 1.263 slugging percentage. ASU had a strong offensive effort on the weekend that out-hit opponents 66 to 20 in large part thanks to Coyle's .474 batting average. Coyle had three multiple hit games and is on a five-game hitting streak.

Escobedo had a strong weekend to start her junior season as she went 4-0 in the circle and highlighted her weekend pitching a perfect game. The Glendale, Ariz., native, pitched the perfect game against Boise State after five innings, with a relief pitcher in the sixth she recorded a no-hitter. The Sun Devils beat Boise State 10-0. Escobedo threw three complete games on the week, 2/2 shutouts, one save and allowed just one run and one walk. Escobedo had a 0.28 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched in the tournament. She recorded 39 strikeouts on the weekend highlighted by fanning 15 batters against New Mexico, 10 against Indiana, and eight in the win over Kentucky. She was one strikeout shy of her single-game career record of 16 in the 3-0 win over New Mexico, but has already passed her 2012 season high of 14. Her wins move her career total to 65 and moved her up to 6th all-time in the ASU record book.

This is Coyle's first Player of the Week award and the 73rd all-time for ASU. It is Escobedo's third career Pitcher of the Week award and the 74th all-time for ASU.

Arizona State's 7-0 start is the best for the program since the Sun Devils went 15-0 back in 2007. The Sun Devils are now ranked third in both the USA Today/NFCA poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. They will remain at home this week as they host the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz., beginning Friday, Feb. 15.
