More on close games in Pac-12 play... With 13 Pac-12 games played to date for each team, each have played in at least seven games decided by single digits. ARIZONA STATE, OREGON and USC lead the way, each having played in 10 such Pac-12 games. COLORADO, UTAH and WASHINGTON STATE follow with nine games each.
The STANFORD tandem of junior forwards Josh Huestis and Dwight Powell have been hot of late. Over the last six games, Huestis has posted five double-doubles and is averaging 14.3 points/11.0 rebounds, while Powell has posted four double-doubles and is averaging 18.5 points/10.3 rebounds.
WASHINGTON STATE sophomore G DaVonte Lacy hit 7-of-9 from three-point range for a career-high 27 points in a one-point setback to Oregon State, while sophomore G Royce Woolridge hit 6-of-9 from three-point range in scoring a career-high 36 points in the overtime loss to Oregon... As a team, the Cougars have combined to hit 26-of-56 (.454) from beyond the arc in the last two games.
COLORADO sophomore G Spencer Dinwiddie was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line in Colorado's game with Arizona State. Dinwiddie has now made 32 consecutive free throws dating back to the Feb. 7 game with Oregon. The school record is 45 by Cory Higgins in 2010-11. Dinwiddie has made more free throws (143) than all but one other Pac-12 player has attempted (Oregon State's Roberto Nelson is 124-of-159)
OREGON STATE sophomore G Challe Barton has started the last five games for the Beavers. The team is averaging 70.4 points with Barton in the starting lineup the last five games, after averaging 67.5 points in the first eight games of league play. Barton is shooting 11-of-21 from the field and 5-of-10 from three-point range and averaging 6.0 ppg during his string of starts, including a career-high 11 points in the win at Washington State. He was averaging 1.8 points in 21 games played this season prior to his insertion into the starting lineup.
With 199 assists this season, UCLA G Larry Drew II needs one more to become the first Bruin since 1995 to post 200 assists in a season - current UCLA Director of Basketball Operations Tyus Edney dished out 216 assists in 1995. The Bruin single-season record is 236, set by Pooh Richardson in 1989.
ARIZONA STATE junior C Jordan Bachynski has tallied a league-leading 98 blocked shots this season. Only five Pac-12 players in history have posted 100 or more rejections in a season:
1) 115 - Mario Bennett, ASU (1995)
2) 113 - Rodger Farrington, ASU (1997)
3) 102 - Jelani McCoy, UCLA (1996)
3) 102 - Loren Woods, ARIZ (2000)
5) 100 - Taj Gibson, USC (2009)
COLORADO junior F André Roberson needs seven rebounds to reach 1,000 career rebounds to move up into third on Colorado's career rebound list. Currently with 993 rebounds, he stands second behind Buffs all-time leader Stephane Pelle (1,054 reb, 1999-03)... His 11.8 rpg average currently leads the nation.
UCLA freshman G Shabazz Muhammad is averaging 18.5 points per game. That figure ranks seventh all-time among Pac-12 freshman. ARIZONA STATE G Jahii Carson's 17.7 points per game average ranks 10th on the list.
HOME SWEET HOME... Pac-12 teams sport a 127-47 (.730) home court record so far this season. In Pac-12 play, the home team holds a slight 44-34 (.564) advantage... The crowd for Colorado's home game with Arizona State was 10,926, the 10th crowd over 10,000 this year (adding to the school record), and it raised the total for 12 home games to 124,943, now the second highest gross total in school history; the 10,412 average works to 94.1 percent of capacity (11,064) of the Coors Events Center this season... Arizona leads the Pac-12, averaging 14,067 fans per game.
