"12 Best" Hits Networks Airwaves
The fall season may have wound down a couple months ago, but it lives on for the Pac-12 Networks.
The networks have launched a “12 Best” series that consists of six episodes that review the fall of 2012. The series continues Monday night with “The 12 Best Men’s Soccer Matches of 2012” at 7 p.m.
Three shows have already aired – “The 12 Best Football Games of 2012,” “The 12 Best Women’s Soccer Matches of 2012,” and “The 12 Best Football Plays of 2012.” Following Monday’s show, the remaining specials include “The 12 Best Football Players of 2012” and “The 12 Best Volleyball Matches of 2012.”
“We tried to put a different spin on season-review shows,” Pac-12 Networks producer Bob Schmelzle said. “We’re always looking for 30-minute programs that are a little more evergreen.”
For the football shows, the networks staff came up with 20 nominees in each category and they were submitted to a vote by Pac-12 analysts such as Rick Neuheisel, Glenn Parker, Jeremy Bloom, Yogi Roth and Ronnie Lott. For the other sports, the networks used input from coaches and players to finalize the list.
“The shows lend themselves to talking points and debate,” Schmelzle said. “Everybody loves a list show, everybody loves to get ranked. That’s what makes the shows compelling.”
Using the Campus Cam technology, the networks have been able to get input from coaches and players on the programs. The interviews have enriched programming in different ways. For instance, when he was interviewed about his 366-yard performance against Colorado last season, Arizona running back Ka’Deem Carey said he thought he only rushed for 266 yards until he started receiving a flurry of text messages after the game.
“All of these shows have a good pace,” Schmelzle said. “If you don’t like one of play, in two minutes you have another one. It’s fast moving. It’s a fun little show to watch.”
