Day 1 recap: Arizona, Stanford win relays
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Arizona won the 200-yard medley relay and Stanford captured the 800-yard free relay on Wednesday to emerge as the early leaders at the 2013 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Men’s and Women’s Diving Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
The Wildcats took the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.22, unseating two-time defending event champion California. The winning relay team was made up of seniors Lauren Smart, Ellyn Baumgardner and Megan Lafferty and junior Margo Geer. USC finished second in 1:36.41 and Stanford rounded out the top three with a time of 1:36.54.
Stanford won the 800-yard free relay with a time of 6:57.12. Juniors Felicia Lee and Maya DiRado, freshman Julia Anderson and senior Andi Murez picked up the win for the Cardinal. California, which had won eight of the previous nine Conference titles in the event, was second with a time of 6:58.95 and USC swam in 7:01.28 to claim third place. All three teams swam automatic NCAA qualifying times.
Stanford has the early lead with 118 points followed by Arizona with 116. USC sits in third place with 110 points, and California is fourth with 108 points. Arizona State (100 points), UCLA (96 points), Oregon State (90 points) and Utah (46 points) are ranked fifth through eighth, respectively.
The 2013 Pac-12 Championships continue Thursday, Feb. 28 with preliminaries at 11 a.m. PT and finals at 6 p.m. PT. Tomorrow’s swimming events will be the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle and 200 free relay. Diving begins with the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter.
