ASU's Johnson and Oregon's Hawkins named players of the week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 softball weekly honors for the week of Feb. 25- March 3. ARIZONA STATE's Alix Johnson was named the Player of the week and OREGON's Cheridan Hawkins was voted the Pitcher of the week.
Junior center fielder Johnson posted a team-best .750 batting average, 1.500 slugging percentage, 12 runs scored, nine hits and three home runs in six starts on the weekend. Johnson hit two of her homers in the 13-0 (5) win over East Carolina. She went 4-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored in the game and tied her career best for hits in a single game. She went 2-for-2 in the 15-7 (5) win over North Dakota and 1-for-2 against No. 22 Baylor with two walks and a stolen base. She ranks third on the Sun Devils with five home runs and moved up in the career records to tie for 13th in homers with 21 and to 16th in RBI with 102.
In just her fourth weekend of collegiate play Hawkins tallied Oregon's second-highest strikeout tally ever in her six-inning shutout of Boston College, 8-0 victory, tallying 15 strikeouts in the game. She was just one shy of the school record. She allowed just one hit and walked one in the game. In the tournament finale against James Madison, a 2-1 win, Hawkins struck out six, walked one and allowed only two hits. She stepped into the game against Long Island as a relief pitcher and struck out all six batters she faced in her two innings. For the third straight weekend she kept her tournament ERA below 0.50 after she logged 0.00 ERA's the previous two weekends. She allowed just one earned run on the weekend ending a streak of 39.0 innings the past three weeks without a single earned run. She led the team on the weekend in ERA (0.45), wins (2), innings pitched (15.2), strikeouts (29) and opposing batting average (.078).
This is Johnson's first Player of the Week award and the 75th all-time for Arizona State. It is Hawkins' first career Pitcher of the Week award and the 36th all-time honor for Oregon.
Arizona State tallied a 21-1 record after this weekend facing their first loss of the year. They host the Diamond Devil Invitational and face UC Davis on Friday, March 8 at 4 p.m. MT to start the tournament. The Sun Devils are ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/NFCA poll. Oregon improved to 19-3 on the season and will travel to the Bayer Cropscience Classic in Fresno, Calif. this weekend. The Ducks will kick off the weekend against San Diego State on Friday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. PT. Oregon is ranked No. 9 in the USA Today/NFCA Poll.
