Stambaugh, Zamarripa and Edwards earn gymnastics honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 women's gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Feb. 25-March 3. OREGON STATE's Makayla Stambaugh was named the Gymnast of the Week, UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa was voted Specialist of the Week, and ARIZONA's Shelby Edwards was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the week.

Stambaugh and the Oregon State Beavers tallied their highest score in more than a year earning a 197.175 against STANFORD last week. The score ties for the 10th highest score in school history. Stambaugh scored a meet-high in the all-around with a 39.525. En route to her all-around title she also performed near flawless routines on floor and bars as she scored a 9.950 on both events and tied for first on floor and was the lone winner on bars. The Sacramento, Calif., native, also tallied a 9.80 on beam to tie for fifth place and earned a 9.825 on vault which was good enough to tie for 11th place.

Zamarripa had a strong showing for the Bruins in the road meet at Alabama. The senior won UCLA's only two events taking first place on vault with a 9.95 and won bars with a 9.9. Zamarripa has 17 first place finishes on 30 routines this season, including five on vault and six on bars. She is averaging 9.825 or higher on all four events, including a 9.913 on vault and a 9.891 on bars.

The San Tan Valley, Ariz., native, is continuing to make a strong impact for the Arizona gymnastics team as she helped lead Arizona to a 196.500-193.850 victory over ARIZONA STATE. Edwards tallied a new career high on vault with a 9.850 this past weekend after filling a lineup gap left when teammate Jordan Williams' went down with an injury. It was just Edwards' second vault appearance this season as she tallied the second highest vault score by Arizona and earned her third place in the meet. Edwards continued to make an impact on the team score claiming the meet title on beam with another career high score of 9.875. This was just Edwards' second event title of her career. Both the team's total on vault and beam were season highs for the Wildcats.

This is Stambaugh's sixth career Gymnast of the Week honor and third this season, earning the honor the past two weeks. It is Oregon State's 22nd all-time honor. This is Zamarripa's eighth career Specialist of the Week honor making her the first Pac-12 gymnast to be crowned the Specialist of the Week eight times. It is UCLA's 22nd all-time. It is Edwards' second Freshman/Newcomer of the week honor earning the title the week of Jan. 22nd it is the third honor for Arizona all-time.

Gymnast of the Week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008. It is the first year for Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.

ARIZONA travels to Oklahoma for a non-conference meet on Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m. CT. OREGON STATE plays host to both WASHINGTON and Sacramento State in a tri-meet to be held on Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. PT. The meet will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks on tape delay airing on March 10 at 6 p.m. PT. UCLA returns home to host CALIFORNIA, Michigan and Iowa State on Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. PT.
