Cal's Ziegenhirt and Oregon's Hawkins earn softball weekly honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 softball weekly honors for the week of March 18-24. CALIFORNIA's Lindsey Ziegenhirt was named the Player of the Week, while OREGON's Cheridan Hawkins was voted the Pitcher of the Week.
Ziegenhirt came alive at the plate this weekend in the first weekend of Pac-12 play in a three-game sweep over UTAH. The senior catcher went 5-for-7 with two home runs and a double on the weekend to continue her best season of hitting in her career. Ziegenhirt went 1-for-2 with one run and a walk in the opening game of the series, which Cal won 6-0. She had her biggest game of the series in game two when all three of her hits went for extra bases as she went 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double to tally four RBI. She went 1-for-1 in the final game of weekend in the Golden Bears' 4-1 victory. She was also active on the defensive side of the ball as she was responsible for two crucial putouts to tag Utah runners at home and prevented the Utes from tying the ball game. She had a .714 batting average, 1.714 slugging percentage, three runs and two homers and a double for six RBI on the weekend.
Hawkins pitched eight scoreless innings in the two-game series vs. No. 15 Stanford on the weekend. The freshman pitcher claimed wins in relief in the 4-3 and 3-2 victories over the Cardinal. She retired 14 of her 18 combined outs via strikeouts and allowed only two infield hits and no walks or runs. She bettered her season average on strikeout per seven innings with a 16.33 average on the weekend. Entering the weekend, she ranked sixth nationally with her 10.8 average. Entering the game on Sunday, Hawkins led the Pac-12 in opposing batting (.090) and saves (3).
This is Ziegenhirt's second Player of the Week award and the 84th all-time for California. It is the second Pitcher of the Week honor for Hawkins. earning her first on March 5 this season and brings Oregon's all-time total to 37.
