By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of March 18-25, 2013:
Men's Track Athlete of the Week: RYAN HERSON, ARIZONA STATE (RS-Fr., Foothill Ranch, Calif.). Herson left the field behind in his first-career 5,000-meter run in a Sun Devil uniform, clocking a new career-best time of 14:02.92 for his first career win. Herson was 22 seconds ahead of the field, running the last quarter of the race on his own with no one pulling him along. He currently finds himself with the nation's fastest time in the early goings of the season.
Women's Track Athlete of the Week: ASHLEY LIVERPOOL, USC (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio). Liverpool posted the top collegiate time in the 400m race of the Trojan Invitational, running in a time of 53.58. The time is the fourth fastest in the nation in the 400 meter this season and tops in the Pac-12. Liverpool also anchored USC's 4x400m relay team, which ran 3:37.97, the sixth-fastest time this season by a collegiate team.
Men's Field Athlete of the Week: JULIAN WRUCK, UCLA (Jr., Brisbane Queensland, Australia). Wruck set a UCLA school record (65.04m/213-5) and won the discus, helping the No. 12 Bruins (149 points) defeat No. 4 Texas (147.5 points) and No. 2 Arkansas (84.50 points) at the Texas State Elite Meet. Coming into this weekend, Wruck was second all-time in Bruin's discus throw annals, a mark he set just over a month ago during the indoor season. The 2011 NCAA men's discus champion threw one of the top marks of his career and currently owns the world's leading mark in 2013, surpassing the great John Godina for best all-time in UCLA history. Wruck was also named the Division I National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Women's Field Athlete of the Week: CHELSEA CASSULO, ARIZONA STATE (RS-Sr., Lompoc, Calif.). Cassulo broke the Arizona State school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 69.80m/229-00 at the ASU Invitational. The throw puts her eighth on the NCAA all-time top 10 individual list. The throw was further than any student-athlete throw in collegiate competition last season. Her first-ever hammer throw competition in a Sun Devil uniform, the mark was the second-best mark in Pac-12 history behind only USC's Eva Orban career-best of 70.18m/230-03. Cassulo was also named the Division I National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
