By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Michael Kim of California has been named the Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Month for March, the Pac-12 announced today.
Kim, a sophomore from Del Mar, Calif., earned top individual honors at both tournaments in which Cal competed in the month of March to regain the No. 1 national individual ranking he had attained early in the Spring. Kim, who has now earned individual medalist honors in a school-record four of his last five events, shot a blistering 16-under par to win the Fresno State Lexus Classic by six strokes and led Cal to a 37-stroke victory with a 43-under par total.
He then shared individual medalist honors and led the Golden Bears to a 13-stroke victory at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters that included 12 of the nation's top-ranked 13 teams. He stormed back from an opening-round four-over par round that left him tied for 51st after the first 18 holes to play the last two rounds in eight-under par and finish in a four-way tie for the lead after 54 regulation holes.
Kim had a stroke average of 68.67 for the month with five of his six rounds played in the 60's. He lowered his stroke average for the season to 69.93 to rank fourth nationally. He is currently the No. 1 player on both the Palmer Ranking for the United State team and Haskins Award Watch List given annually by Golfweek to the nation's top collegiate player of the year.
Cal has won a school-record eight of nine tournaments in 2012-13 and is now only two wins shy of equaling the unofficial national record set by Oklahoma State in 1985-86. Dating back to the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign, Cal has won 14 of its last 23 events overall and finished in the top five in all 23.
Also nominated for golfer of the month honors were Jon Rahm, Fr., ARIZONA STATE; Jason Burstyn, Sr., COLORADO; Jonathan Woo, So., OREGON; Patrick Rodgers, So., STANFORD; Pontus Widegren, Sr., UCLA; Chris Williams, Sr., WASHINGTON.
