Novikov and DeSimone named the Pac-12 tennis players of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA sophomore Dennis Novikov and USC sophomore Gabriella DeSimone the Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for the week of March 25-31, the Conference Office announced Tuesday.
Novikov defeated a pair of ranked singles players in the team wins over CALIFORNIA and STANFORD, both by a score of 5-2. The sophomore, currently ranked No. 32 in the nation, topped Cal's Chris Konigsfeldt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. In the match with the Golden Bears, Novikov paired with Marcos Giron in doubles to upset the 26th-ranked pair of Johnson and Konigsfeldt, 8-6 in the number one spot. Novikov faced Stanford's Nolan Paige and won 6-4, 6-4. Novikov is now 15-9 on the season in singles play and 8-4 against ranked singles opponents. UCLA improved to 16-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-12.
DeSimone earned two strong singles wins in addition to a doubles win in matches against No. 13 CALIFORNIA and No. 14 STANFORD. DeSimone faced Cal's Annie Goransson in a decisive win, 6-1, 6-4. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., native, paired with teammate Zoe Scandalis to held the Trojans sweep the doubles courts with an 8-3 win over California's pair of Duranteau and Fabikova. DeSimone faced Stanford's Ellen Tsay on the singles court in which DeSimone pulled out a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the match for the Trojans with her 6-1, 7-6 (5) win. The win for USC was the first over the Cardinal at Marks Stadium since 2009. USC is now the only team undefeated in the Pac-12.
