WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA sophomore Dennis Novikov and USC junior Kaitlyn Christian were named the Pac-12 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for the week of April 15-21, the Conference Office announced Tuesday.
Novikov helped the third-ranked UCLA men's tennis team capture the program's second-straight Pac-12 regular-season title last week as Novikov won both his doubles and singles matches. Novikov paired with Marcos Giron to upset USC's then-No. 32 Yannick Hanfmann and Ray Sarmiento, 8-6. Novikov tallied another upset over then-No. 14 Sarmiento on the singles court, 6-4, 6-2. Novikov's win gave the Bruins an insurmountable 4-1 advantage. With the win Novikov improved his records on the season to 18-10 in singles and 19-7 in doubles. UCLA went a perfect 7-0 in Pac-12 play this season.
Christian helped USC finish off the regular season with a 6-1 victory over rival then-No. 7 UCLA. The junior teamed up with Sabrina Santamaria to top the doubles team of Montez and Morton, 8-3. In singles play she faced UCLA's then-No. 90 Kaitlyn Ray. Christian rebounded from a loss in the first set and rallied to beat her ranked opponent with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback effort. USC notched its first back-to-back wins over rival UCLA since 2006 improving to a 21-2 overall with a 10-0 finish in Pac-12 play. Christian was undefeated with Santamaria at 26-0 this season and her singles win was Christian's eight straight as she improved to 21-6 overall with a perfect 8-0 mark in Pac-12 matches.
