Day 1 men's recap: Washington and Utah advance
Men's bracket [gallery ids="353,351,350,346,347,348,349,352,354"] OJAI, Calif. - The first day of the Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championships kicked off in Ojai, Calif., at the 113th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament. Fifth-seeded Washington topped eighth-seeded Arizona in the first match, and sixth-seeded Utah defeated seventh-seeded Oregon in the second match after a two hour and 25-minute rain delay. The Huskies repeated history matching their 4-0 win of their first match at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of seniors Marton Bots and Kyle McMorrow defeated Arizona’s team of junior Fredrik Ask and sophomore Sumeet Shinde, 8-3. On court three the Husky pair of freshman Hudson Barnhart and sophomore Emmett Egger topped freshmen duo of Naoki Takeda and Matt Dunn, 8-5. Play was abandoned on court two with the match of Washington sophomore Jeff Hawke and Max Manthou against Arizona junior Mario Urquidi and Kieren Thompson as Washington had claimed the doubles point. In singles play, McMorrow, Bots and Manthou all claimed victories for the Huskies to sweep the match, 4-0. Play was abandoned in the matches on courts four through six with Washington’s Egger vs. Arizona’s Urquidi, UW’s Hawke vs. Arizona’s Takeda and Washington sophomore Nick Kamisar vs. Arizona sophomore Carlos Bermudez, respectively. No. 14 McMorrow defeated Thompson on court one, 6-1, 6-1. In the second spot Bots topped Ask, 6-1, 6-1. Claiming the last point for Washington, Manthou defeated Shinde, 6-0, 6-1. The Huskies will move on to the quarterfinals to face No. 4 seed Stanford. The match between Utah and Oregon went down to the wire in one of the tightest matches ever played in the Pac-12 Championship. Utah claimed the tight victory in the 4-3 win over Oregon to advance to the quarterfinals. In doubles play the point went down to the final match, with Utah claiming the point. The Oregon No. 1 pair of 67th ranked Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier topped the Utah duo of Ben Tasevac and Dmytro Mamedov, 8-5. Utah turned around to win on court two with Cedric Willems and Slim Hamza, beating Oregon’s Alex Rovello and Daniel Sardu, 8-2. To claim the doubles point on court three, Utah’s Devin Lane and Alejandro Medinilla topped UO’s Aaron Clissold and Daan Maasland, 8-5.

Singles play began with the No. 5 slot finishing play and Oregon gaining a point as Sardu topped Willems, 6-3, 6-2. Play was stopped shortly after for over a two hour rain delay. When play resumed, Utah claimed another point on court two to gain the lead with Mamedov beating Mullen, 6-4, 6-3. Utah’s Ben Tasevac topped Oregon’s Lova Randriamampandry on court six by a score of 7-6, 7-5. Oregon was quick to come back and gain their second point when Rovello topped Lane after coming from behind, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Another point came for Oregon when Cambier tallied a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to upset over Hamza who is ranked No. 107. The final point came down to court three with Utah’s Medinilla against UO’s Maasland with the point going to Mednilla in a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 battle. Washington will face No. 4 Stanford at 11 a.m. PT on Thursday April 25. Utah advances to play California at 2 p.m. PT. Both matches will be played at Libbey Park.
