Cal's Homa named Pac-12 men's golfer of the month
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Max Homa of California has been named the Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Month for April, the Pac-12 announced today.
The Valencia, Calif. native led No. 1 California to its second straight Conference title by winning individual medalist honors at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships in Los Angeles. Cal's victory at the Pac-12 Championships was its 10th of the year, matching the unofficial NCAA record for tournament wins in a season set by Oklahoma State in 1985-86.
Homa and the Golden Bears were dominant at the Pac-12 Championships as Homa held the individual lead and Cal maintained the team lead through each of the four rounds of the tournament. Homa finished five strokes better than teammate and runner-up Michael Weaver, while Cal finished nine shots better than second-place finisher and host UCLA. Homa kicked off the tournament with a 9-under 61 in the first round to break the course record at the North Course at The Los Angeles Country Club. He became the third Bear in the 54-year history of the event to win individual medalist honors, and posted the first outright win of his career.
Homa also had a strong showing at the Western Intercollegiate earlier in the month, where he tied for second with teammate Michael Kim and helped Cal to its ninth victory of the season.
Homa has four top-eight finishes in six spring events and has posted a 71.8 stroke average for the season. Cal has won 16 of its last 26 tournaments overall and finished in the top 10 in all 26. California became the first-ever team to sweep the Conference golfer of the month award.
Also nominated for golfer of the month honors were Jon Rahm, Fr., Arizona State; Nick Chianello, Sr., Oregon State; Anton Arboleda, Jr., UCLA; Chris Williams, Sr., Washington.
