Tolman, Appel named Pac-12 players of the week
By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Oregon freshman third baseman Mitchell Tolman has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Stanford senior right-handed pitcher Mark Appel has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 29-May 5, the Conference office announced Monday.
Tolman batted .474 (9-for-19) with a double, three walks and 14 RBI as Oregon won four of five games on the road last week, including a sweep of Washington State in Pullman. The Lake Forest, Calif. native hit safely and notched an RBI in each of the Ducks' five games last week and registered multiple hits in three contests. He went 3-for-4 (.750) and drove in seven runs in a 12-7 victory over Seattle on Tuesday - his seven RBI were the most by a Duck since Jack Marder collected eight on March 9, 2010. He added a hit and a pair of RBI in a loss at Seattle on Wednesday. In a three-game series with Washington State over the weekend, Tolman went 5-for-12 (.417) with five RBI and three walks. He scored the winning run from first in Sunday's 11-inning victory over the Cougars after starting the rally with a two-out hit. Tolman, who entered the week with 12 RBI, is tied for third on the team with 26 RBI.
This is Tolman's first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Oregon's 11th all-time selection. Oregon's Ryon Healy earned the distinction last week after batting .400 (6-for-15) with a double, two home runs and seven RBI.
Appel struck out 13 batters in 7.2 innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs to lead the Cardinal to a 5-3 victory over No. 16 Arizona State on Friday. It was the 22nd career outing with double-digit strikeouts for the Austin, Texas product, who issued just one walk on the evening. The All-American struck out the side in the second, fifth and sixth innings, and fanned seven in a row midway through the contest en route to earning his eighth win of the season. Appel, the league leader in strikeouts (106), ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with a 1.56 ERA and boasts a .195 opposing batting average.
This is Appel's second Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod of the season and the fourth of his career. Cardinal pitchers have won the award a league-best 79 times.
