Cal and Stanford advance to second weekend; three other women's tennis teams get started
All five Pac-12 women's tennis teams in the NCAA championships saw action on Saturday. Three teams started their tournaments in opening-round play, while the other two punched their tickets to the Round of 16.
Headed to the tournament's third round are the Bay Area schools. The eighth-seeded California Golden Bears advance to see Alabama next week as they defeated Auburn, 4-0, in Berkeley. Across the bay and down the peninsula, the Stanford was busy sweeping its own way into the third round as the Cardinal handled the Rice Owls, 4-0. The Cardinal will now head to Urbana, Illinois to face either USC or UC-Irvine who square off Sunday.
The opening-round squads saw similar success as ASU was the only school to drop a single point. UCLA and USC each swept their opponents (Army and Sacramento State, respectively) in reaching Sunday's second round. The Bruins will square off against Oklahoma State at noon PT, while the Trojans face UC-Irvine at 10 a.m. PT.
And those Sun Devils? Still out in Georgia, they've drawn the regional hosts and play Georgia at 11 a.m. PT for their shot at the Round of 16.
