Pac-12 men's tennis awards announced

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote by the Conference's eight coaches, UCLA sophomore Dennis Novikov has been named the Pac-12 Men's Tennis SIngles Player of the Year, CALIFORNIA pair of junior Campbell Johnson and senior Christoffer Konigsfeldt have been voted Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year, CALIFORNIA's Johnson was selected the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year and UCLA's head coach Billy Martin has been awarded the Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday.

Novikov went 13-7 in dual match singles competition this season. He is currently ranked 27th in the nation going into the NCAA Tournament. Novikov helped lead UCLA to their first-ever No. 1 seed for the NCAA Championship as he played in the No. 1 spot for the Bruins in 16 matches this year. Novikov played in the top spot at the Pac-12 Championship helping UCLA claim the Pac-12 title. Novikov has posted a 1-0 record in singles play thus far in the NCAA Tournament topping his opponent from Drake in the second round.

Johnson and Konigsfeldt paired for the first time this season as Johnson transferred from Georgia. The pair created quite a duo posting a 11-7 record together and are ranked 26th in the nation. They were selected to participate in the NCAA Doubles Championship that will occur after the NCAA Team Tennis Championship. The duo have played in the No. 1 spot for the Golden Bears this season, including currently at the NCAA Team Championship.

Johnson was unanimously voted as the Newcomer of the Year as he posted a 26-12 record in dual match singles play this season. He played in the No. 3 spot for California stepping up into the No. 2 spot against Washington to earn a win. Johnson, a junior transfer, is currently ranked 60th in the nation. He was selected to play in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship competition. In the NCAA Team Championships Johnson has posted two victories and clinched the first round match for Cal over No. 33 Florida State.

Martin was named the Coach of the Year as his peers unanimously voted upon him as the award winner. Martin led the Bruins to near perfect 24-1 overall record and a perfect 7-0 Conference record this season earning the regular season Pac-12 title. The Bruins were crowned the Pac-12 Tournament Champions under Martin's guidance as they topped USC in the final match of the tournament by a score of 4-2. Martin helped garner the Bruins their first No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament after holding the top spot in the ITA rankings for the final two weeks of the season and never being ranked lower than fourth.
