Track and field recap: Pac-12 sends heap of athletes to NCAA championships

Even though the regularly sunny skies of Austin, Texas saw a bit of rain Friday, the Pac-12 athletes looking to qualify for a trip to the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Ore. shined.

The first session of the day included pole vaulting, jumping and and throwing. Of these events, there were three women's competitions: discus, high jump and pole vault. High-flying Brigetta Barrett of Arizona, who recorded the highest women’s collegiate jump in NCAA history at the 2013 Pac-12 Championship, punched her ticket to nationals with a jump of 1.79m. Fellow Pac-12 qualifying jumper Lauren Crockett of Oregon will join the record breaker after posting 1.75m.

A large group of Pac-12 women field athletes who qualified for Eugene Friday were the women's discus throwers, who made up more than one-third of the event's finalists. Five Pac-12 throwers qualified including Arizona State's Anna Jelmini, first-team outdoor All-American and 2013 Pac-12 Champion. Jelmini will join Alyssa Hasslen (Arizona), Julie Labonte (Arizona), Baillie Gibson (Arizona) and Alexandra Collatz (USC) at the 2013 NCAA championships.

There were two men's field events in session one: shot put and hammer throw. Four-time NCAA champion and three-time Pac-12 champion Jordan Clarke was the only Pac-12 athlete to claim a spot at this year's NCAA shot put championship coming in seventh overall with a throw of 18.61m.

The Ducks finished higher than any other Pac-12 teams in seven events: Men's 110 meter hurdles, Women's 400 meter dash, Men's 400 meter dash, Women's 100 meter dash, Women's 200 meter dash, Men's 800 meter run, and Women's 200 meter dash.

The Pac-12 Women dominated the 200 meter dash with seven athletes representing six of the Pac-12 schools. English Gardner (Oregon) leads the pack, followed closely  by Akawkaw Ndipagbor (USC), Carissa Levingston (Stanford), Jenna Puterbaugh (USC), Charnell Price (California), Germe Poston (Arizona) and Asia Gooden (Arizona State).
