By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Eight Pac-12 baseball players have been named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American team, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced Thursday. Two players were selected to the first team, three were named to the second team and three landed on the third team. Oregon State and Arizona State led all Conference schools with two All-Americans apiece.
Stanford senior RHP Mark Appel and UCLA sophomore RHP David Berg were first team selections. Berg, the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, owns an NCAA-best 0.70 ERA. He is 6-0 in 41 appearances and has tallied 18 saves, while boasting a .190 opposing batting average. He is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes award and the Howser Trophy.
Appel, the Cardinal's all-time strikeout leader, has tallied 130 strikeouts this season to rank second in the NCAA. He owns the Conference's fourth-lowest ERA (2.12) and has tossed four complete games. A 2012 Louisville Slugger first-teamer, Appel is also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Howser Trophy.
Arizona State freshman LHP Ryan Kellogg, Oregon State freshman RHP Andrew Moore and Oregon closer Jimmie Sherfy have been named to the second team. Kellogg went 11-0 in the regular season and sits at No. 3 on the Sun Devils' single-season freshman wins list. He is one of just five pitchers in the NCAA to win at least 11 games without a loss.
The Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Moore is the only Conference hurler with 12 wins this season (ranks third nationally), and his 1.22 ERA and .193 opposing batting average rank second in the league. He has tossed three complete-game shutouts in 2013, the most by an OSU pitcher in more than a decade.
Sherfy, who ranks second in the NCAA with 20 saves, owns Oregon's top two single-season marks in the category--he had 19 saves in 2012. He boasts a 1.67 ERA in 36 appearances this season and has struck out 52 batters while walking 13. He was a third-team selection in 2012.
Oregon State senior LHP Matt Boyd, Arizona junior 3B Brandon Dixon and Arizona State junior Michael Benjamin are third-team honorees. Boyd, who went 10-3 during the regular season, ranks third in the Conference with a 2.09 ERA. Dixon (.369) won the league's batting title, while Benjamin leads the Pac-12 in slugging percentage (.569), hits (81) and total bases (132).
