Roundup: Weight of expectations for Arsalan Kazemi
Whenever CNN has a Pac-12-themed article, you know we gotta be on it, and yesterday the news conglomerate chronicled the weight of expectations Araslan Kazemi has as he carries Iran into the NBA. The former Rice Owl and Oregon Duck became the first Iranian-born player to be drafted in the NBA a couple of weeks back and is now at the Orlando Pro Summer League with the Philadelphia 76ers.
If you missed SharkNado (the best made-for-TV movie ever created) last night, perhaps you can catch the upcoming sequel SarkNado, a SyFy original college football movie featuring Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian (it's not an actual movie, but it would be awesome if it were).
With Kevin Danser, Cameron Fleming and David Yankey being named to the Outland Trophy watch list, you could call it an Outland Trophy tree-play. The Cardinal also had four players named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list-- Shayne Skov, Ed Reynolds, Ben Gardner and Trent Murphy. That number on the Nagurski list was matched only by the recently-departed Ashley Atwell's Alabama Crimson Tide (we'll miss ya, Ash! (No one calls her Ash, to my knowledge)). As usual, the ESPN Pac-12 Blog has all the Pac-12 representatives on the Outland and Nagurski watch lists.
Pretty cool video on "The Mayor" Johnathan Franklin entitled "Franklin's Playbook". These seven minutes detail the second day of the NFL Draft (rounds two and three), a day Franklin did not hear his name called (he had to wait until Saturday to get picked up by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round).
Unfortunately for Rich Rod, Arizona defensive back Vince Miles has left the program due to an undisclosed medical issue. Fortunately for RichRod, all of his starters from last year's secondary unit return for 2013.
Mr. Big Shot is headed back to Rock City; that's right- Chauncey Billups is returning to the Detroit Pistons, the team with which he won an NBA title in 2004. Those Pistons teams had the most understated swag of all time before "swag" was really a term (it was more "swagger" back then). I've never seen a team exude a "we got this" confidence down 20 points in an elimination game quite like those Pistons squads for the next four years after they won the title.
The subject of arguably the best basketball book ever written, Play Their Hearts Out, is on the move again: Former Arizona State Sun Devil and New Mexico Lobo Demetrius Walker has transferred to Grand Canyon, as the provisional D-I school will play its first year in the WAC. The head coach of the 'Lopes is none other than the great "Thunder" Dan Majerle.
Time to check up on Reshanda Gray as she recounts her first week in Russia. The Cal women's hooper is playing for Team America at the World University Games, making the most out of limited minutes (including this perfect day in Russia).
Oregon State AD Bob De Carolis and head football coach Mike Riley make the top 10 of John Canzano's 25 most influential people in Oregon sports. So do Oregon AD Rob Mullens and football head coach Mark Helfrich, so consider the Civil War rivals even on that front, with 3-1 still remaining to reveal.
With the announcement earlier this week that Utah and BYU are planning to play each other in 2017 and 2018, let's take a look at Block U's expectations for the 2013 BYU game coming up in a couple of months.
Three national team championships and 52 All-Americans are included in USC's 2012-13 year in review. UCLA fans might not want to watch the first 30 seconds of the video at the bottom of the page (assuming they click on the link at all).
Former Cougar southpaw Adam Conley was named a Southern League All-Star. The lefty is doing work on the bump for the Jacksonville Suns, the Double-A affiliate of the
Florida Miami Marlins.
