Video: Missy Franklin recalls prank during verbal commitment
Missy Franklin made her Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games, swimming her way to four golds and a bronze. Decent showing for her first go-round. More notably, she was 17 years old at the time and vocal about her desire to swim in college. Jackpot.
Cal women's swim coach Teri McKeever had a unique advantage that summer when it came to recruiting Franklin: McKeever was the head coach of the 2012 U.S. Olympic women's team, and therefore Franklin's coach. Again, jackpot. But as the veteran coach has said in past interviews, she wouldn't use their time in London to court the star swimmer for the Golden Bears. Her focus was on winning medals.
Fast-forward to October 2012, when Franklin was ready to commit to a collegiate program. She called McKeever with a heavy heart and told her... well, watch the above clip to see what she said.
