Tonight on 'The Drive': Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin and Cal's Sonny Dykes talk sabermetrics

Sep 25, 2013

Though he's the head football coach at a premier university, Sonny Dykes also has a passion for baseball. In fact, Dykes played first base while in college at Texas Tech and began his career actually coaching baseball. So it seems natural that former Cal Golden Bear and current A's manager Bob Melvin would invite Dykes to throw out the first pitch at a recent A's game.

As this exclusive clip from Pac-12 Networks' docu-drama The Drive, Melvin shares his praise for Dykes' playcalling and the Bears' hustle. Then this nugget: Both are avid sabermetrics junkies. The Athletics for some time have been using advanced data analyzation to shape their team under general manager Billy Beane, whose "Moneyball" system spread like wildfire in baseball. Could it also make its way into college football?

See more from Dykes' visit to the A's game including his first pitch in tonight's full episode of The Drive at 7 p.m. PT only on Pac-12 Networks.
